A superb 6 mile walk from Barnoldswick over Weets Hill with outstanding views to Pendle Hill and The Yorkshire Dales

Weets Hill

To find the start of this walk on Sat Nav. I’d suggest typing in Barnoldswick as the Town and then Gillians Lane. The car park is approx 100 metres beyond Gillians Lane. Alternatively use Gillians Lane with the junction of Moorgate Road and Park on either. This saves a pretty stiff climb back to the car park right at the end of the walk.

This walk may well become one of my favourites. I really enjoyed the route. The only downside was the state of one or two of the fields due to the nonstop rain of 2012. On a frosty day, or if we ever have a dry spell, it would be superb. Otherwise expect to get your boots muddy.

From the Letclife Country Park car park, turn right and walk about 100 metres before turning left into Gillians Lane, walk down the hill past Bancroft Mill with it’s tall chimney and then left into Moorgate Road.

Walk up Moorgate Road and continue on as it becomes an unmade farm track, bending left and then right as it climbs steadily. At a fork, keep straight on to pass Stanbridge Farm, Take stile in to the field on the right and turn sharp left to climb with the wall on your left.

Continue on upwards on the obvious path with the wall to your left passing through 3 stiles on your way to the summit which is visible ahead. After the 3rd stile the path veers diagonally right, way from the wall to reach the trig point.

The views from here in all directions are superb (depending on the weather). Pendle Hill dead ahead looks fantastic, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks are visible to your right and on the left the ridge of Boulsworth Hill and Blacko Tower can be seen.

After admiring the view, bear left from the trig point, back towards the Wall and drop down towards the now visible Weets House Farm. On reaching the farm you find yourself on a stoney track, turn right and follow this track down hill, reaching a gate, pass through it and continue on, now with a wall on your right hand side. Another gate is reached, pass through on to a narrower grassy track and again head straight on.

As you reach a tarmac track, ignore the track on the right and keep straight on downhill heading for Lane Side Farm. Through the gate and turn right along Brogden Lane.

After half a mile or so you pass a farm on the left, shortly followed by another, Flass House Farm. Pass this and then look for a stile in to the field on your right a couple of hundred metres passed the farm. Cross this stile in to the field and bear left, heading for a stone wall with a stile that takes you on to a farm track.

Follow this track passed Jack House farm on the right and continue straight on, At the next house on the left, a stile straight ahead goes into the field, take this and continue straight on to another stile. Lots of mud and water in this field, but follow the muddy farm track onwards to pass to the left of Hollins Farm and take the stile immediately after the house to pass the side of the building and then left on to the firm farm track.

This track meanders down hill for a considerable distance, half way down weather permitting you get a good view of the ridge you climbed at the start of the walk. At the end of the track turn left on to a narrow road and after about 100 metres turn right through a stile in to another wet field and follow the obvious grass path diagonally left, across another stile and another wet section, then another stile takes you back to Moorgate Rd. Retrace your steps back to your car.
