Pen y Ghent from Horton In Ribblesdale. 6 miles, very challenging climb to the summit.

From the car park in Horton in Ribblesdale, turn right and walk back down the road past the "Pen y Ghent Cafe", a few yards later a footpath marker post directs you accross the road and up a track between cottages. Pass through a kissing gate and at a junction of paths turn right. (The other path wil be our return route).

Follow this stoney track through the farm yard and cross the footbridge over the back directly in front of you. Follow the road up through Brackenbottom, passing the school on the right. Keep on the road until it starts to bend right, and a footpath sign directs you left through a style on to the path to Pen y Ghent.

Follow the wall on your left as the path climbs ever onwards towards the summit. It's impoosible to go wrong as this must be one of the most trodden paths in England and has had alot of work doneon it to prevent erosion. The path crosses a couple of wall stiles and involves some mild scrambling up the limestone fault lines before eventually reaching the Pennine way at a stile in the wall.

At this point turn left, and continue uphill on the well built stone path, more like a stairway really. From here the going gets quite tough as it climbs very quickly and involves quite abit of hands and feet scrambling in places. Soon the summit plateau is reached and a 5 minute walk on a much gentler incline brings you to the trig point and wind shelter.

Pass through the stile in the wall and follow the path (Pennine way) as it starts to descend the fell. After a few minutes the path turns sharp left, the onward path is the route of the 3 peaks walk. We turn left here down the more obvioustrack and follow it as it winds down the hillside. At a gate further down the path, the track turns sharp left. A grass path on the right will take you to Hull Pot. Just a couple of hundred yards and well worth a visit.

After visiting Hull Pot, return to the track and follow this wide stoney path all the way back to Horton in Ribblesdale. Eventually arriving at the junction of tracks mentioned at the start. Straight on here, back to the road, turn right, pass the cafe and back to the car park. On your right, weather permitting will be the impressive sight of the mountain you have just conquered.
