A Fabulous 5 mile walk, not particularly difficult, a couple of short climbs and a brillianr pub half way round Park on Green Arms Road (B6391) just as you turn on to it off the A666 Bolton to Darwen Road. From
the car walk back to The A666, turn right, then in about 75 yards turn
right again throufg a gate on to a wide public footpath. In a couple of
hundred yards the path forks and another broad track risies slightly on
th left, take this path as it then descends bearing left, then left
again passing the superb Red Quarry wall on your left after about 10
minutes of walking. Just passed the quarry the track bends sharply
right with a hair pin bend and continues with the river now in site
below you on the left. Almost straight away, Look for wooden steps
dropping left to rach the river
Back to top of pageReach the river and carefully cross via the stones. This will obviously depend on the flow of the river, but unless we've had very heavy rain it's easily crossable. Over the river and pass through the gate stile ahead and the path leads slightly left before it climbs sstone steps up the right hand side of the face of cadshaw Rocks. (It's called the Fairy Battery on the map). Reach the top and stop to admire the view. The onward path now rises away from the rocks and up towards a fence line, bear right and follow the fence to reach a gate on your left. Sometimes locked but easy to climb over, then head in a straight line just a 100 yards or so to reach a wide track. Turn left. and follow the track up to a stile and on to a crossroad of tracks. Turn right on the wide path and follow this as it meanders across the moor for a good mile or so before it descends slightly to Edge End. At Edge End the path turns right and descends down a lovely track emerging at a wider track at the bottom. Keep straight on, on this track passing New House Farm on your left before arriving at The Strawberry Duck Pub. An excellent place to stop for a pint or a bite to eat. A sign on the door welcomes Walkers and Dogs. Out of the pub bear right and walk around it. follow this track passed a row of houses and it soon descends to emerge at Entwistle Reservoir. Turn right and follow the the path as it hugs the reservoir shore line. As you walk around a tight bend over an incoming stream keep left and as the wider track bears right uphill keep left for just a few yards back to the shoreline. on your left you'll see the metal sculpture of a huge Herron in the reservoir. bear right and again follow the shoreline, eventually arriving at a footbridge over the river you crossesd near the begininng of the walk. Bear right and follow the path with the river now on your right to reach another footbridge. Don't cross it but as you approch it you'll see a stepped path on your left rising up the banking through the tress. Take this, you're soon at the top where the track widens and runs on to meet the fork where yo turned left to pass the quarry near the start of the walk. From here, retrace your steps back to the car. |
